On August 30th and 31st, the historic city of Edinburgh welcomed martial artists from around the world for the highly anticipated UMKS Scottish Championship 2024. Hosted by United Mirae Kuk Sool (UMKS), this two-day event brought together competitors of all ages and skill levels for a memorable celebration of martial arts excellence, camaraderie, and sportsmanship.
The championship began on Friday with the black belt adult divisions, where competitors vied for the prestigious Grand Champion and Mirae Champion titles. In addition to performing Empty Hand Forms, Staff Forms, Sword Forms, Techniques, Self-Defense, and Sparring, the black belt adults faced a challenging breaking competition that tested their power and precision. The air was filled with excitement as each competitor aimed to execute flawless breaks, adding an extra layer of intensity to their quest for victory.
To win the title of Grand Champion, competitors had to demonstrate their all-around martial arts abilities across multiple events. Points were awarded based on placement: 1st place earned 5 points, 2nd place earned 4 points, 3rd place earned 3 points, and 4th place earned 1 point. The competitor who accumulated the highest total points across all categories was awarded the honor of Grand Champion, earning not only the admiration of their peers but also a well-deserved medal as a symbol of their achievement.
Saturday continued the excitement with the color belt divisions and black belt youth competitors taking to the mats. Young martial artists demonstrated exceptional skill and enthusiasm in their performances, impressing both judges and spectators. The color belt divisions showcased a range of techniques and forms, while the black belt youth competitors displayed a level of proficiency that hinted at their promising futures in martial arts.
Throughout the weekend, the spirit of martial arts was on full display, emphasizing dedication, perseverance, and the joy of competition. Medals were awarded to those who achieved top placements, recognizing their hard work and skill. However, the event was about more than just winning; it was a celebration of the martial arts community, where everyone left with memories, friendships, and renewed motivation.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the competitors for their incredible performances, the families who came out to support them, and the dedicated volunteers who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make this event possible.
